How to Remove and Replace a Toilet:
Replacing a toilet can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and instructions, it’s a project that can be tackled by most DIYers. Whether you’re upgrading to a newer model, fixing a leak, or just giving your bathroom a fresh look, this guide will walk you through the entire process, from removing the old toilet to installing the new one.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Putty knife or scraper
- Sponge or towel
- Bucket (for water)
- New toilet (including tank, bowl, and seat)
- Wax ring (or rubber seal)
- Closet bolts
- Caulk or silicone sealant
- Plumber’s tape (optional)
- New water supply line (if necessary)
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Before you do anything, turn off the water to the toilet. Locate the water shutoff valve behind or beside the toilet and turn it clockwise to stop the flow of water. Then, flush the toilet to drain as much water from the tank and bowl as possible.
Step 2: Disconnect the Water Supply Line
Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank. Be prepared for any remaining water to drain from the line, so place a towel or sponge underneath to catch any spills.
Step 3: Remove the Toilet Tank (if separate)
If your toilet has a separate tank and bowl, begin by unscrewing the bolts that secure the tank to the bowl. These bolts are usually located at the back of the tank. Use a wrench or screwdriver to loosen and remove the nuts, and then carefully lift the tank off the bowl. Set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the Toilet Bowl
Now, you’ll need to remove the toilet bowl from the floor. Start by removing any decorative caps that cover the bolts securing the bowl to the floor. Use your wrench to unscrew and remove the closet bolts (the bolts securing the toilet to the floor).
Once the bolts are removed, carefully rock the toilet bowl back and forth to break the wax seal underneath. Be cautious, as the bowl may still be attached to the flange. When the bowl begins to lift, gently pull it away from the flange and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the Old Wax Ring
After the toilet bowl is removed, you will see the old wax ring on the flange (the pipe fitting on the floor that connects to the toilet). Scrape away the old wax with a putty knife, making sure the flange is clean and free of debris. You might also want to check that the flange is in good condition, as a damaged flange may need to be replaced.
Step 6: Prepare the New Toilet
Before you install the new toilet, make sure you have all the necessary parts, such as the new wax ring (or rubber gasket), closet bolts, and the new water supply line (if required).
Place the new wax ring on the flange, ensuring it is properly aligned and seated. Some people prefer to warm the wax ring slightly before installation to make it easier to mold.
Step 7: Install the New Toilet Bowl
Carefully lift the new toilet bowl and align the closet bolts with the holes in the base of the toilet. Once aligned, gently lower the bowl onto the wax ring. Apply firm, even pressure to seat the bowl fully into the wax ring.
Check to make sure the toilet is level. If it is not, adjust it until it sits evenly on the floor. Once the bowl is in place, tighten the closet bolts (but don’t over-tighten, as this can crack the bowl).
Step 8: Install the Toilet Tank
If your new toilet has a separate tank, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure the tank to the bowl using the provided bolts. Be sure the tank is properly aligned before tightening the bolts.
Once the tank is secured, connect the water supply line to the tank. Use plumber’s tape on the threads if needed to ensure a tight, leak-free connection.
Step 9: Reconnect the Water Supply Line
Reconnect the water supply line to the bottom of the toilet tank. Tighten the connection using your adjustable wrench, but be careful not to overtighten.
Step 10: Test for Leaks
Turn the water supply valve back on and let the tank fill with water. Once the tank is full, flush the toilet and check for leaks around the base, water supply line, and tank. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections and check again.
Step 11: Secure the Toilet and Caulk Around the Base
Once you’re sure everything is functioning properly, caulk around the base of the toilet to prevent water from getting under the toilet. This will also help secure the toilet in place. Allow the caulk to dry before using the toilet.
Step 12: Final Adjustments
If needed, adjust the seat to the correct position, and clean up any remaining tools or debris.
Conclusion
With proper installation, your new toilet should function smoothly and reliably. Take your time to ensure all connections are secure and check for leaks before using the toilet.
