How to Hang a New Door:

Hanging a new door may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a bit of patience, you can do it yourself. Whether you’re replacing an old door or installing a new one, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process. From measuring and prepping the frame to ensuring a smooth finish, here’s how to hang a new door with ease.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following materials and tools:

  • New door (make sure it fits the frame)
  • Hinges (usually 3)
  • Screwdriver or drill with bits
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Shims (if needed)
  • Saw (if door needs trimming)
  • Wood screws
  • Door handle and latch
  • Door frame (or existing frame if replacing)

Step 1: Measure the Door Frame

Before purchasing your new door, measure the door frame carefully. You’ll want to ensure that the door fits properly into the existing opening. Measure both the width and height of the frame.

  • Width: Measure the width of the door frame at the top, middle, and bottom to ensure it is even.
  • Height: Measure from the floor to the top of the frame.

When purchasing the new door, buy one that is slightly smaller than the frame’s measurements to allow for proper clearance and adjustments.

Step 2: Prepare the Door

If you’re installing a pre-hung door (one with a frame attached), skip this step. For a door that needs to be hung in an existing frame, you’ll likely need to adjust the size of the door to fit.

  • Trim the Door: If the door is too wide or tall, use a saw to trim the edges. Always measure twice before cutting!
  • Mark the Hinge Placement: Using a measuring tape, mark where the hinges will go on both the door and the frame. The standard distance for hinge placement is 7 inches from the top and 11 inches from the bottom of the door.

Step 3: Attach the Hinges to the Door

Once your door is the right size, attach the hinges to the door.

  • Mark Hinge Placement: Position the hinge on the edge of the door, lining it up with the marks you made earlier.
  • Mortise the Hinge Recesses: Use a chisel to create a shallow recess (called a mortise) for the hinge plate. This step ensures the hinge will sit flush against the door edge.
  • Screw the Hinges in Place: Using a screwdriver or drill, secure the hinges to the door with screws.

Step 4: Install the Hinges into the Door Frame

Now, position the door in the door frame to check for alignment and fit. Use shims (small pieces of wood) to hold the door in place temporarily.

  • Position the Door: Insert the door into the frame and mark where the hinges will align with the frame.
  • Mortise the Frame (if needed): If there’s no recess for the hinges in the frame, use a chisel to create one.
  • Secure the Hinges: Attach the other side of each hinge to the door frame using screws.

Step 5: Check the Fit and Adjust as Needed

Once the hinges are installed, check the door’s swing. Open and close it to ensure it moves smoothly and doesn’t rub against the frame. If the door sticks, use a plane or sandpaper to trim the edges until it fits properly.

  • Level the Door: Use a level to make sure the door hangs evenly in the frame. Adjust the shims as necessary to keep it level and plumb.

Step 6: Install the Door Handle and Lock

Once the door is securely hung, install the door handle and latch:

  • Mark the Handle Placement: Measure and mark where the handle and latch will go, typically about 36 inches from the floor for a standard handle.
  • Drill Holes for the Handle: Use the appropriate size drill bit to create holes for the handle and latch mechanism.
  • Install the Handle and Latch: Attach the handle, latch, and strike plate according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure everything lines up properly when the door is closed.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

  • Tighten Screws: Double-check all the screws and tighten them if necessary. Make sure the hinges are secure and the door handle functions smoothly.
  • Check the Swing: Open and close the door a few times to ensure it swings freely without catching or rubbing.
